Dr. Judith Burnett is a licensed psychologist specializing in reproductive health issues. She is a graduate of Brown University (A.B. with honors in psychology) and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (M.S., Ph.D. in clinical psychology). She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Vanderbilt University Consortium in Nashville, Tennessee and received post-internship training at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. and postdoctoral training at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Burnett's psychological practice emphasizes utilizing clients' strengths by honoring the uniqueness of their experiences and assist clients in helping themselves. She focuses on integrating the relationship between emotional and physical health as well as spiritual well being.
The inability to conceive or maintain a pregnancy affects individuals and couples in myriad ways. The "infertility experience" often invades every aspect of individuals' and couples' intimate lives. In addition, you may feel shame, doubt, anger, as well as guilt about your difficulty having a child. Fertility struggles often produce a considerable drain on one's resources (e.g., time, financial, spiritual energy). Finally, relationships with friends, family and professional colleagues may also be impacted.
Infertility is a powerful and formidable adversary and Dr Burnett's philosophy is that individuals and couples faced with fertility struggles endure repeated "invisible losses" which often are not recognized in our society. Psychological support to face these challenges helps to normalize and externalize this difficult experience.
Dr. Burnett has over 15 years experience working with individuals, couples, and families. She has written (see below) and presented on topics such as coping with individual and relational challenges of fertility, cultural considerations and fertility, and understanding the impact of infertility: mental health considerations.
Professional counseling may help you to cope more effectively with feelings of confusion, disappointment, depression, helplessness, failure, hopelessness or other emotions that arise as a result of your experience in addressing fertility issues
